Gmails big merger with Google Chat and Meet starts rolling out today

Last month, Google announced a major revamp of Gmail that would see it merge with two of Google's newer communication apps, Google Meet and Google Chat.

On mobile, the Gmail app gets a new tab bar at the bottom of the app, letting you switch between Mail, Chat, Rooms, and Meet.

Google's rollout strategy means a feature never arrives for everyone all at once, and that's doubly true for GSuite, which has two rollout tracks:

The consumer Gmail app has been taking the four-button tab bar from GSuite and cutting it down to two buttons: Mail and Meet, basically making it a big banner ad for Google Meet.

People spend a lot of time in Gmail, and Google hopes they'll want to do their work chat and video conferencing in the same app.

For users of GSuite, the pitch is that you're paying for GSuite anyway, so you might as well stop paying for Slack and Zoom, too.
