How Facebooks Yann LeCun is charting a path to human-level artificial intelligence

In supervised learning, people painstakingly label data and then feed it to an algorithm to teach it what to look for when solving a problem.

Its already become an integral part of Facebooks work on hate speech detection, language translation, and forecasting the spread of COVID-19.LeCun compares the method to how babies learn by interacting with their surroundings. If machines can better replicate their technique, he believesthey could gain the common sense they need to reach human-level intelligence:

It allows Facebook to influence what researchers work on, foster collaborations with academia and industry, and attract talent to FAIR.

Its much more difficult even if its open source for another company to deploy it in ways that would compete directly with us.

Among its most impactful creations are Memory Networks, which improve how machines talk topeople byhelping them retain enough data to answergeneral knowledge questions.

The system can be used to recommendInstagram posts or to detect extremist propaganda videos that have been tweaked and then reposted to evade removal.
