Facebook May Finally Stop Forcing You to Use Its Messenger App

In the top right corner, you can see the same Messenger icon that brings you to a chat window right in the main app itself.

This all tracks with recent news that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to roll Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger into a single platform. The New York Times cited sources within Facebook as saying that while the services will remain as their own apps, the tech behind all three will be unified.

Its possible that rolling chat back into the main Facebook app is part of this effort, though its not clear if or when it will roll out to the general public.

Since then, Instagrams and WhatsApps founders have all departedrather abruptlyafter Zuckerberg started weighing in more.

And, given all the bad press following Facebooks seemingly never-ending series of scandals, lumping all these apps together might be a ploy at keeping users locked in and engaged.

Everything you do becomes data for companies, which sell that data to affiliates, which then sell your data back to you in the form of targeted ads and personalized recommendations. That is just how things are. But what if it didn’t have to be?". (September 20, 2019)
  2. "Facebook’s Libra cryptocurrency is off to a rocky start. After announcing Libra last month, U.S. lawmakers were none too thrilled given the social media giant’s dubious track record with privacy. Now, the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services is calling on Facebook to halt its plans". (July 3, 2019)
  3. "After months of rumors, it appears a Facebook cryptocurrency is imminent. Reports last week said its planned launch is slated for June 18, and now it appears that the cryptocurrency, Libra, has some legit backers, according to the Wall Street Journal". (June 14, 2019)
  4. "YouTube’s recommendation algorithm doesn’t have the best track record. It’s been caught mixing up inappropriate videos featuring popular kid’s entertainment characters, pushing home videos of children to pedophiles, and even radicalizing youths toward extremist politics. Against that backdrop, the video platform announced it’s going to start giving users greater control over what content pops up on their homepage and Up Next videos". (June 27, 2019)
  5. "I had it all planned out. On the subway ride home, I’d been futzing around in the Jacquard app, assigning actions to my Levi’s Trucker Jacket with Jacquard by Google. A simple double-tap to the wrist cuff as I neared my apartment, and when I walked through the door, I’d strut in to “Touch the Sky” by Kanye West. Stupid, vain, and mildly dorky yes, but I am extra and it’d have been a fun way to announce I was home to my pets and partner". (September 30, 2019)
